Truro Shotokan Karate Club is a non-profit organization. The
Club practices traditional Karate-do, which aims to promote members’ physical,
social and spiritual well-being.
Our Sensei
(teacher): Charles Surette is a 6th dan (6th
degree black belt). The quality of Sensei Surette’s instruction is evident in
the karate-ka who he has trained – he always
ensures their technical excellence and their proficiency in kumite (sparring)
and kata (forms). As a result, many of his students have distinguished
themselves in provincial and national competitions, others have become
high-level officials and prominent instructors.

traditional Okinawan karate, he founded Shotokan Karate-do, introducing it on
the Japanese mainland in 1922.

HOW WE
PRACTICE …
Karate
training can be
understood as a combination of three distinct elements:
Kihon

Basic
techniques, often practiced by groups of students moving together across the
floor
Kata

Traditional
sequences, each made up of a set pattern of defensive and offensive
techniques.
Kumite

Various
kinds of sparring activities, which build upon kihon
and progress step-by-step to controlled free sparring (jiyu
kumite) with a partner.
Shotokan Karate-Do is a
traditional Japanese martial art (budō).
It can also be pursued as:
·
An excellent
means of physical conditioning, adaptable according to age and physical
limitations

self-defence method
